Server Disconnects and Launcher Hangs - Resolved

May 3, 2021

After about 6 days of various bizarre network issues, based on instinct, I replaced my router. That resolved all issues (most of them unrelated to Eve Online) including server disconnects at or immediately after logging into Eve Online. One issue remained. The Eve launcher would hang, with the launcher window staying all white or all grey. Sometimes the Windows 10 task manager would show the application using up to 40% CPU with nothing happening on my ethernet interface, and at other times 0% CPU.

Some quick research led me to advice to run the short script below, and to “run as administrator”. The implication was that this would be a one time fix. In my case, I had to run the script every time I started the launcher.

rmdir "%LOCALAPPDATA%\CCP\EVE\QtWebEngine\Default\Service Worker\CacheStorage" /s /q
rmdir "%LOCALAPPDATA%\CCP\EVE\cache" /s /q

Further research didn't find any help for this specific issue, but provided some hints at things to try. The following sequence of steps seems to have eliminated all issues.

  • Run the script above as administrator.
  • Start the Eve launcher.
  • In the top right corner of the window is a gear icon. Click it.
  • In the right hand menu, select Launcher, and check off “Enable hardware rendering”. It was unchecked. The option to “Enable high DPI scaling” was already checked.
  • Under the Tools/Cache menu item on the right is a sub-option called “Shared Cache”. Click on both the Permissions button, and the Verify button, and let each run to completion.

I cannot say precisely how or why this sequence of steps worked, but hope it may help someone else. The root cause of the problem appears to have been various bizarre network issues on both wired and wireless connections on my home network, which were resolved only be replacing my router.

CCP Bug in Station - No Inventory!

March 31, 2022

I needed to replace a ship. Found an 11 hisec jump wormhole to Jita. Jumped into a clone near Jita, flew there in a corvette, and bought the hull and components I didn't have at home base. My inventory window was empty! I mean completely empty window, without even the twisties for ship and item hangar! Just an empty window with no contents.

I left the station, flew to another system and back, logged off and on…no joy. An internet search produced a tip from 2015 to toggle “enable/disable compact mode”, but was not specific enough. I wasted a lot of time trying to figure it out. Eventually I found that toggle to be an icon in the upper right of the window's title bar. Toggling it once or twice restored the window contents.

Enough time had passed that the wormhole intended for my route back had collapsed. I opened a trouble ticket. CCP first asssumed I didn't know what I was doing and was looking for inventory in the wrong station. Once I updated the ticket with my resolution, they blew me off without acknowledging the bug. I hinted that I was shanghaied and wanted a way home, but the responded that a direct route was available (yea, die pilot!) and nothing would be done. Way to go, CCP. You could have at least acknowledge this ancient bug.
